what is a kaimyo

The first thing most people think of when asked what a Kaimyo (Kai-myo-u) is, is that it is the name given to people at the time of their death for use in their afterlife. However, the true meaning of Kaimyo is the sacred Buddhist name given to a person when one becomes a practitioner of the religion, therefore it is sometimes called their "living name." What a Kaimyo is called and what is required for one to receive a Kaimyo may vary across branches of Buddhism but their general uses and purposes usually are very similar.

  2. Fuchutoukai - thou shall not steal.
  3. Fujainkai - thou shall not have a marital affair.

What does it usually cost ?

The general standard of cost for one to get a Kaimyo is said to be 100,000 yen per letter. In the beginning there used to be no costs because it was a name given to someone once they put their faith into Buddhism. With the passage of time, things had changed and now there are large fees that are required before one receives a Kaimyo.

Recently, the general public standard of cost to be given a short Kaimyo in the suburbs is around 300,000 yen and in urban areas it can cost around 500,000 yen. If a seal is asked along with their Kaimyo, it can cost over 1,000,000 yen.

Changer is Society

Business and society are changing rapidly. With the focus changing towards the nuclear family and with the aging of society, it has become more important for people to be given their Kaimyo while the responsibility still lies within their reach. By doing so, it will prevent the next generation form facing the difficulty of choosing a proper one for their family members when the inevitable comes.

Now, more and more people are choosing to receive a Seizenkaimyo because they saw the many advantages in doing so over what used to be done. Until now, most people had put off receiving a Kaimyo, or a Buddhist name, till their death and had their family members choose one for them after they had deceased, usually with very high fees associated with it. When receiving a Seizenkaimyo, a person is given a Kaimyo while they are still alive. By doing so, people realized that they can reduce the burden it puts on their family financially; as well as emotionally because their family will not have to make the difficult decision of choosing a proper Kaimyo for their loved ones.

There has been several media covering the extremely high fees associated when one is given a Kaimyo. The largest problem surrounding the issue is that in most cases, families leave everything up to the mortuary to handle the funeral, therefore the fees associated with each process, especially with those associated with receiving a Kaimyo, can be unbelievably high. Please do not become a victim to these outrageous costs.

Originally, Kaimyo meant "the name given to the living," therefore it is too late for one to know what their Kaimyo is after they have deceased.

Please do not let this chance to choose your own Kaimyo, which will be with you for eternity, pass you by.
